I'm posting twice in one night.  That's got to be some sort of record. (As I was writing that last bit, Melissa walked up and said, "No posts since September, and now you're posting twice in one night!?")  Anyway, although it's quite possible you all have seen this video, I thought there's a chance that some of you haven't.

Melissa and I were pretty amazed by some of the things Google's next big project can do.  The video is long, but this is going to be a helpful invention when it's up and running.

Some enterprising folks at CERN decided to explain just what it is that the Large Hadron Collider does, and what they hope to find out by using it.  Now they could easily have given a short description of the machine and it's various subsystems, using diagrams and tables to explain the work that they're doing, but that would have lacked "flavor."  Instead, they decided to get down with the get-down.  Ladies and gentlemen, the employees of CERN present to you, the Large Hadron rap:

This conversation just took place in our house:

Melissa: Hon, I'm going to have to rearrange your refrigerator magnets.

Me: Why?

Melissa:  Trapped white space.

(Clicking sound of magnets be rearranged)

Melissa:  There, that's better.  That's been bothering me.

Well, we got back to the house 30 minutes ago, and we saw what two cats can do with lots of time to shed on everything.  I'm sure both Melissa and I will be writing more about the trip soon.  Thank you to everyone who helped us with the cats and the house.

1.  Tonight is the last night we will sleep in our current home.  By this time tomorrow we will be sleeping in our new bedroom, which we haven't finished painting yet.  I can't believe we've lived here for over three-and-a-half years.

2.  Wow, I knew moving would generate some trash, but the volume of it is simply amazing.  We're going to have to go to our local landfill, because it would take weeks to get rid of all this trash through our normal pick-ups.  What's scarier is that we aren't finished yet, not by a mile.

3.  We're still packing!  Saturday is going to be an adventure in last-minute packing.  Luckily a small army of people is coming to help us move.

4.  Gator Orange paint is BRIGHT!  :-)

That's all for now.  More after Monday, when we have Internet service again.

Spider-man 3

My wife and I just got back from seeing Spider-man 3, which has to be one of the odder films I've seen recently.  We were able to see the noon showing at our local theatre, along with my wife's friend.  Sadly, I think the preview for Pirates of the Caribbean 3 might have been my wife's favorite part of the experience.

The entire film feels very disjointed, with wild swings in the tone of the film and little production numbers that feel interesting but out of place.  My wife described the movie as "schizophrenic," and I don't think she enjoyed it all that much.

I felt like I had watched what would have been season one of a Spider-man television spin-off.  It felt as though Sam Raimi had taken the season-long story arcs of a show like Smallville or Buffy, picked out the sweeps episodes, and condensed them into a 2 hour and 10 minute film.  I think all of the elements that were present could have worked, but without all the "filler" episodes that a tv series allows for, we had no time to develop much of anything.  While I still liked the movie, it's definatively less than the sum of its parts.

Strangely, although Sam Raimi directed this film as well, it feels like he couldn't decided what kind of movie he wanted to make.  The emphasis in this film is much more on the relationships Peter has with Mary Jane Watson and his best friend Harry Osborne.  It's as though Raimi wanted to make a romantic drama about the personal life of Peter Parker, but the producers had to keep reminding him that this is a superhero film.  Several of the action sequences are difficult to follow, although you can at least figure out who's winning at any particular moment.  And all of the minor characters, including the villains, are so under-developed that they're practically an after thought.

Ah well, I like the film well enough, but I think I would have liked it much more as a tv show.  Perhaps Sony and Marvel will realize this as well.  Smallville will end after next season, so perhaps the CW should start thinking about a replacement.

Is a Puzzlement.

I managed to get our main computer up and running today, which was a huge relief.  When I turned it on the other day, I received one of Microsoft's scary/unhelpful error messages informing me that "NTLDR" could not be found.  After a bit of research on the internet, I discovered that this is the file that is responsible for loading the operating system, which meant that our computer was a giant paper weight if I couldn't find a way to fix it.

Adding to my sense of woe was the fact that all of our digital pictures are on the machine.  Until a couple of years ago, I always used to try and take film pictures of important events, even if I was taking digital pictures too.  Since then, however, I've gotten into the habit of using only the digital camera.  It's small, it's easy to use, and it takes good pictures (and short videos).  And, of course, there's the cost of developing film, which is why we've not yet developed our photos from our Honeymoon.

Thankfully, someone else out there has had this problem, and they created a website that explained the way to fix the computer.  After some mild frustration, I managed to get the computer to load Windows, although it still couldn't do it on it's own.  Finally, today, I added one more tweak that fixed it.

Why did the computer erase one of the most crucial files on the computer?  Who knows.  It just did.  Thankfully the problem was correctable.  Now, of course, I'm having that if-you-get-me-out-of-this-I'll-never-mess-up-again feeling, so I've backed up our photos.  Soon I'll back up the whole machine.  Let this be a lesson to everyone: back up your computer files, since you never know when your computer will decide to damage itself.

"First we're gonna beat Jackson State.  And then we're gonna beat Purdue.  We're going to beat Butler, Oregon, UCLA, and Ohio State!  Yeaaahhhh!"

My wife is happy today.  And do you know why she's happy today?  Because her husband's team just won the National Championship in basketball again, and so I'm in a great mood!  Since we also won the National Championship in football in January, and finished with the consensus #1 football recruiting class in February as well, I figure this means that I'm going to be well nigh insufferable until August. Then the worry will start again.  But until that time, I'm going to enjoy this amazing string of successes.

Things are going so well that our women's gymnastics team won it's first SEC Championship since 1989.  Plus, the baseball program made it all the way to the championship game a couple of years ago.  And after all this, I've got to think we have a good chance of winning the All-Sports trophy from Stanford this year.  So, yeah, things are going great in Gainesville.  Maybe there's something in the water?

What is amazing about this year's run to the title is that it really was different from last season.   All year, our players have been talking about how they would have to climb the mountain using a different path than last season, and they did.  Last year, Joakim Noah became a dominant player in the post-season and carried the team to a championship.  The other players helped a bunch too, but you could see that Joakim was the star around with they revolved.  This year, the entire team pulled together to get to the top of the mountain.  Joakim wasn't as dominant, but Al Horford, Corey Brewer, Lee Humphrey, Taurean Green, and others pulled together to help Florida repeat as champs.  It's difficult enough to be great a something, but to have to learn to be great in a totally different way is simply amazing.

So my wife is very happy today.  She'll have fun laughing at me.  Laughing whenever a huge smile crosses my face for no apparent reason.  She'll know why I'm smiling.  She finds it funny that something like that can bring a smile to my face.  But she'll enjoy it none the less.  And I'm happy.  I'm happy that my Gators won, and I'm happy that I can give my wife something to smile about.
